Rider men’s basketball clips Coppin State

Kevin Baggett knew his guys were tired.
So even though his team was back on the East coast after a Thursday flight home from San Diego, the veteran Rider coach knew things could be a little dicey in a Saturday road game even though it was against an opponent the Broncs should handle easily.
Tariq Ingraham scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Rider did enough to record a 64-53 victory over Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex Arena in Baltimore.
“Give our guys credit for figuring it out and finding a way,” Baggett said. “This is what happens when you play a lot of games back-to-back-to-back like this. You don’t have a lot of time to practice and you have a lot of slippage on offense and defense. It doesn’t stop because we got Navy coming up and then we got Iowa.”
The Broncs (2-1) picked up their second straight win after splitting that season-opening West coast trip at No. 22 UCLA and San Diego. They also remained a perfect 5-0 in games against the Eagles (0-3) out of the MEAC.
T.J. Weeks Jr. finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Flash Burton (11 points in 25 minutes) and Ife West-Ingram (4 points, 6 rebounds in 20 minutes) provided a boost off the bench.
“It was kind of one of those put a guy in and figure it out and see if we had it and if he didn’t we tried to figure out the next guy,” Baggett said. “It’s kind of the way it was. When we talk about depth some of our guys off the bench were really good. Ife West-Ingram was great. I thought Flash gave us some good minutes.”
Rider surged in front with a 12-0 run early in the second half after Coppin tied it at 31-all with the first four points of the period.
The Broncs outscored the Eagles, 20-6, from the free throw line, which helped offset a tough shooting night from the outside (2-of-14 from 3).
“Our guys are tired. There’s no doubt about it,” Baggett said. “There’s a lot of travel there. As much as you are trying to rest, they are falling asleep on buses and planes and that’s still not great rest. We’re a little dinged up. It’s that time of the year for us. We got to keep these guys going and keep them physically right and mentally right.”
Cruz good to go
Baggett said the eligibility issue that was keeping Zion Cruz out of the lineup has been resolved and the junior guard sat out the first three games while recovering from a foot injury.
Cruz was dressed on Saturday but did not play.
“We thought about putting him in,” Baggett said. “He did not have a chance to practice. (Friday) was the first day he was out of the boot and moving around.”
Baggett said he expects him to make his debut on Tuesday at Navy.
“He’s just another athletic guard who competes,” Baggett said. “He still needs to find his way. He hasn’t had that great of success at this level yet. But what we’ve seen in practice from him is he’s another guy who can score the ball and another guy who should be able to guard the ball.”
Zion Cruz is at home with Rider men’s basketball and hoping to find best version of himself
