Lakeland Community College women’s basketball coach Ornette Gardenhire is banking on his squad overcoming its lack of numbers with balanced scoring and sheer determination. The Lakers have only eight players on the active roster as they try to build on last season’s 13-9 record. “All eight of these players can contribute, but the numbers force you to improvise in practice,” Gardenhire said. The top returnee is 5-foot-11  sophomore center Monica Devine (Jefferson). She averaged 5.6 points and 7.0 rebounds last season. Sophomore guards Jai’Lynne Hitt-Swartz, Trinity Jackson and Nitzy Rios are being counted on to provide offensive production and leadership. Filling  out the starting lineup and rotation are freshman guard-forward Kennedy Gadsen and freshman guards Madisen McFadden (Fairport), Da’Vionna Singleton  and Kiara Smith.
