Donald Trump made a stunning comeback this week, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for president. Traditional “Blue Wall” states Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin helped the GOP retake the White House. Illinois and Chicago went solidly blue, but Trump did gain some ground, especially in areas of the city with a high population of Latinos.
The state of Illinois will still have a Democratic supermajority after Tuesday’s vote, and Gov. JB Pritzker promised to defend protections Illinoisans have in a variety of areas, such as reproductive health and immigration, under a second Trump administration. In Chicago, three independent school board candidates beat out their opponents with better resources, and Eileen O’Neill Burke handily won the race for Cook County state’s attorney. Mayor Brandon Johnson faced questions and pushback from the City Council this week over his pitch to fill the budget deficit with a $300 million property tax hike. Plus, the Bears lost again this week, this time to the Cardinals, raising questions about whether coach Matt Eberflus is right for the job.
