As state prisons run short, Burleigh County jail staff say they have more room in lockup

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Right now, prison supervisors in North Dakota say they're out of room, but the situation is not as severe at a county jail just outside the capital city.
A supervisor at the Burleigh Morton County jail says they have room for more inmates right now.
As we previously reported, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced they're now in a prioritization plan, which means some more serious offenders will be housed in state prisons first.
How the rate cut decision affects North Dakota
And that means that some county jails around North Dakota may have to house men and women offenders longer.
Burleigh County Sheriff's Department Major Trent Wanger tells KX News that the county jail can handle around 350 inmates, but he says that number can change greatly by the day.
"We're standing very well for staffing, we are fully staffed, which is the first time we have been fully staffed in many years," Major Wanger said. "But, if you take a deeper dive into that at this time, we have 13 staff that are in a training status, so they're not able to work an independent assignment."
For this year, Burleigh Morton County Jail was budgeted for around $11.8 million.
