State House Spotlight: Election aftermath
Nov 08, 2024
BOSTON (WWLP) - This week at the State House in Boston, all eyes were on the presidential election and preparations for the next four years.
Massachusetts lawmakers on what might change after election
Governor Healey and other state leadership reacted to Trump's victory and growing support in Massachusetts. They also looked ahead to potential Trump-era policies, as little changed as a result of the election for the state legislature.
With 99% of votes counted in Massachusetts, Trump gained almost 50,000 voters in Massachusetts since the 2020 election. Many of these voters voted in the South Shore, the south-central part of the state, and parts of western Massachusetts.
Governor Healey held a news conference on Wednesday, addressing how Massachusetts plans to handle a potential nationwide ban on abortion, "That's something that we're very committed to, and we will make sure that women and those who need care are protected here in Massachusetts. Always, always," said the governor.
In the Commonwealth, the balance of power between Democrats and Republicans saw very little change. The Governor offered a message to all Massachusetts residents, regardless of political party.
"We care about each other. And we look after one another," said Governor Healey. "Whoever you are, whoever you voted for, know that we're going to continue to work together and move forward."
Governor Healey sued the Trump administration over 100 times as an attorney general, raising concerns about how the commonwealth's government would get along with the incoming presidential administration. Both the governor and the current attorney general have insisted that they will do everything in their power to advocate for Massachusetts residents.
