MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A disturbing wave of racist text messages targets Americans across 20 states, as children, students, and professionals receives hateful messages from unknown numbers.
“Greetings… you and your family members have been selected to pick Cotton at the nearest plantation… be ready at 12 AM November 13 sharp… with your belongings… our executive slaves will come get you in a brown van be prepared to be searched down and once you’ve entered the plantation, you are in plantation group D.”
That's what the message says, according to Vickie Terry, executive director of the NAACP Memphis chapter. She says the message was sent to her niece in Atlanta Wednesday night.
“This is spreading all over the country, It’s not just here in Memphis,” Terry said.
Law enforcement across the US say racist texts referencing slavery have been reported in several states, including Tennessee.

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Frances Carmona says her 15-year-old niece was terrified after she received the message as well.
“I just seen my niece's scared look," Carmona said. "It was a scared look in her eyes.”
A concerned school teacher in Austin, Texas, took action, asking his students if they'd received similar racist texts after discovering the disturbing trend.
“A student said, yeah I got one, saying something about you're gonna get deported,” said Sean Hinton.
The FBI released a statement saying:
“The FBI is aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.
As always, we encourage members of the public to report threats of physical violence to local law enforcement authorities.”

“Whoever shared these text messages they need to be prosecuted because these are terrorist threats," she said. "They need to be prosecuted by the FBI.”
