INDIANAPOLIS — A drug dealing suspect died while in IMPD custody this week after officers say he swallowed narcotics while being arrested.
The suspect - who was arrested after allegedly being seen dealing drugs - was chased by officers during a pursuit prior to his arrest. After swallowing the drugs and being handcuffed, he was taken to Eskenazi Hospital where he later died.
IMPD said an undercover officer saw the suspect - who was not identified in a statement Friday - involved in a drug transaction around 4:40 p.m. Thursday and carrying a handgun. The officer called for assistance and eventually the suspect's car was found near E. 30th Street and Post Road on the city's east side.
Detectives attempted to pull over the suspect's car, but IMPD said he continued driving. Officers initiated a pursuit, during which the suspect allegedly hit a mailbox and an IMPD squad car. The pursuit ended approximately six minutes later when the suspect crashed into an uninvolved car in the 9200 block of Neptune Drive.
IMPD said that the officer who's car was struck was uninjured. The driver and child passenger in the uninvolved car on Neptune Drive were reportedly checked out by medics on scene and released.
After the crash, police said that the suspect ran on foot. Officers reportedly chased him and eventually tackled him to the ground. This is around when IMPD says the suspect swallowed the drugs.
"The suspect struggled and was resisting officers' attempts to place handcuffs on him and placed his hands in his mouth swallowing suspected narcotics," IMPD said in a statement Friday. "Officers asked the suspect several times to spit out the possible narcotics, but he did not."
The suspect was then reportedly handcuffed and taken into custody. IMPD said officers called medics to the scene after they believed that the suspect had swallowed possible narcotics.
"The suspect was awake and breathing at the scene," IMPD said.
IEMS crews then arrived and took the suspect to Eskenazi Hospital in an ambulance. Police said the suspect regurgitated the suspected drugs while en route to the hospital. The remnants were then collected and submitted for testing. They have not been identified as of Friday afternoon.
IMPD said that once at the hospital, the suspect's condition deteriorated. Despite lifesaving efforts, the man was pronounced dead. The Marion County Coroner's Office reportedly responded to the hospital and is now investigating the cause and manner of the man's death. MCCO will identify the dead man at a later date, IMPD said.
Police said that a firearm, shown below, was found inside the suspect's car. IMPD said that that gun has also been collected and submitted as evidence.

IMPD confirmed Friday that multiple officers involved in the arrest were wearing body-worn cameras and that the cameras were activated. Two of the involved IMPD squad cars were also equipped with dash cameras that captured the pursuit and crash, police said.
Several investigative groups will now review IMPD's involvement in the incident.
"The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the death investigation," IMPD said. "A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency is assisting with this investigation."
No other information was immediately provided. As of 3 p.m. Friday, the deceased individual has not been identified and his cause and manner of death have not been determined.
