Man pleads guilty to murder in connection to 2023 ambush shooting
Nov 08, 2024
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - One of four people linked to a 2023 homicide pleaded guilty this week for his alleged role in the crime.
Allen Superior Court documents show Samuel Evans IV, 24, pleaded guilty to murder in connection to the shooting of 40-year-old Dennis Dwayne Starr in July 2023. Starr was on his way to work early one morning when he was found dead in his car near the intersection of Lower Huntington Road and Kruge Drive.
According to court documents, the shooting stemmed from an alleged assault at a cookout in July 2023. Lexus Evans – who was Starr’s girlfriend at the time of the shooting – told police in court documents she was jumped by Starr’s friends, and it wasn’t until he returned and told them it was enough that they allegedly stopped assaulting her.
Detectives used surveillance footage and cell phone pings to track the accused as they allegedly followed Starr on his way to work a few days later.
Lexus Evans pleaded guilty in September to battery and is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 22.
Samuel Evans III - the father of Evans IV - and Jesse Shears both pleaded guilty to battery. Their sentencings are each scheduled for Nov. 18.
The sentencing for Evans IV is scheduled for Dec. 2. Because the three other suspects have pleaded guilty to lesser charges, their murder charges could be dropped at their respective sentencings.
