Victoria D’Imperio saddling up for one last tourney run with TCNJ women’s soccer

Soccer means a great deal to Victoria D’Imperio, but her passion for the sport is only topped by her love for her team, her teammates and her family.
D’Imperio’s has earned many honors during her four years at The College of New Jersey, including being announced as the two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Midfielder of the Year and a three-time All-NJAC first team selection.
Although D’Imperio is grateful for them, all she knows none of it would be possible without her teammates.
“It’s awesome,’’ said D’Imperio. “But, everything that I have been able to do would never happened without the team. So, I love how successful this team has been and how successful it has made me. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the coaches and the team they set me up perfectly.’’
D’Imperio and the top-seeded Lions (16-0-2) are looking for a perfect ending to the conference playoffs when the face No. 3 Montclair State (11-5-5) in the championship game set for noon at Lions Stadium.
“We have to keep the intensity up and play a full 90 minutes and play our best soccer heading to the NJAC final,’’ said D’Imperio. “It’s very exciting and we have a lot of confidence.’’
TCNJ has won 10 straight since draws with No. 12 Johns Hopkins and Stevens, and will be hoping to continue the streak and earn the automatic NCAA bid.
D’Imperio, who has 13 goals and 28 points, was joined on the All-NJAC first team by Ava Curtis, who was named the Defender of the Year.
TCNJ coach Dan Blank was named the Joe Russo Coaching Staff of the Year. Alyssa Alfano, Rachel Burkhard and Allie O’Keefe were named to the Second Team and Abby Najdzinowicz and Rachel Robichaud received Honorable Mention.
D’Imperio’s passion for the game developed when she played for NJ Rush, continuing through high school at Northern Burlington and grew even greater these past four years at TCNJ.
“The coaches made me excited for practice and the games and we won the state cup. I enjoyed the game throughout high school and then coming here made it even better,’’ said D’Imperio. “I’m very passionate about the game. The best part of my day is going to practice and the games and hanging out with the team, I love it.’’
One of her greatest memories at Northern Burlington was getting the chance to play with her sister, Deanna, who also played at TCNJ.
Another great memory came when the Lions faced Rutgers-Camden when she scored three goals and in the process became just the seventh player in program history to record 100 points.
“It was awesome,’’ D’Imperio said of the moment. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the team they really helped me and set me up to succeed, I give them all the credit.’’
Despite having three coaches in her four years, D’Imperio has continued to be a steady performer on the field, a leader off the field and all the while being a great teammate.’’
“I have learned to adapt,’’ said D’Imperio. “Dealing with different coaches and new players coming in we realize we are not going to be the same team from the previous year so being able to adapt and being grateful that we get a chance to be new team, or an even better team. Going through the coaches we are so lucky we got to be where we are now.’’
Blank, in his two years at TCNJ, has brought the Lions back to the national scene and once again setting goals that end with a Final Four appearance.
D’Imperio and the other seniors — Curtis, O’Keefe, Burkhard, Robichaud, Greta Bush, Ella Van Dine, Cassidy DiSabato and Caroline Rebele — reached the national championship game as freshman before falling to Christopher Newport for their only loss, finishing 21-1-2.
“It’s going to be a challenge,’’ admitted D’Imperio, of another title run. “But this team has a chance to get there and we all want it very badly. We want to be there again.’’
While D’Imperio will give in to a few superstitions, she’d prefer a nice meal after a good win, a good pizza, no doubt.
Along with her parents, Troy and Nancy, and sister Deanna, she enjoys horseback riding.
Right now D’Imperio is saddling up for a great tourney run.
