FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — 10 veterans graduated the Allen County Veteran's Court on Friday. This is the 11th graduating class of the Veteran's Court Program, totaling the number of both circuit and superior court graduates from the program to 134. The program treats ex-service men facing charges which stem from substance abuse and mental health issues. Allen Circuit Court Judge Ashely Hand said Veteran's Court graduates have spent around two years meeting with their probation officer, maintaining their sobriety and learning strategies to keep a good mental hygiene. Hand said offering the resources Veteran's Court provides is essential for ex-service men going through hard times and is a deserved second chance for veterans who enter the criminal justice system. "They have committed their lives to serve our country," Hand said. "I think it is our duty as a community to give back to them in the same manner."
