How to protect your lungs from brush fire smoke
Nov 08, 2024
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The smoke from these recent brush fires can cause serious health effects.
Wildfire smoke is a serious health risk for people living and working near fires, especially those with lung health issues and emergency responders.
Brush fires continue to burn across Massachusetts: What preventative measures can be taken
According to the American Lung Association, breathing in smoke places even healthy individuals at risk. To protect your health, the Lung Association recommends staying indoors if possible, especially if you live near the fire.
You should protect the air in your home and car by keeping doors, windows, and fireplace dampers shut, and when driving, keep your windows and vents closed. Operate air conditioning only in the "recirculate" setting.
Keep an eye on your symptoms, too. If you experience any difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest heaviness, or lightheadedness, contact your healthcare provider.
Next, look out for our kids, who may be more affected by the smoke. Keep them inside, and think about evacuating if they have worsening symptoms. While filtered masks like an N-95 may protect adults, remember they are not made for children, so still take extra precautions.
And finally, know where and when to ask for help, especially at-risk populations. The Lung Association is a free resource to answer any questions, and if you notice any signs of smoke inhalation, contact your healthcare provider.
