Georgia State Election Board planning for next election
Nov 07, 2024
ATLANTA (WJBF) - The 2024 Presidental election is over and voting groups are starting to lay out things for the state election board to look into for future rules and regulations.
The Georgia State Election board passes rules to counties on how to run elections and has met several times this year prior to the presidential election.
"The state election is a five-member body — one from the Republican party, one from the Democratic party, one from the state house, state senate and the chair is appointed by Governor Kemp," said Director of All Voting is Local, Kristin Nabers. "Their job is to pass to rules in elections. They do not play a role in certification and that is done by the secretary of state."
The Secretary of State has until Friday, Nov. 22 to certify this year's election results, which he said did not have any major glitches or delays for voters.
"The state election board has been extremely busy over the last few months despite objection from election professionals all over the state. County election directors say these are a bad idea but the board chose to pass them anyway," said Nabers.
Earlier this year, the board passed three new rules when it comes to hand counting ballots and recertifying elections, but those were denied by a Georgia judge for 2024.
"I think the rules that were most concerning were rules that certification discretionary. The rules are clear that certification is a must do for any all members on the board," said Nabers.
The board's role is to address complaints from voter, such as missing absentee ballots or issues at the polls like the bomb threats this year. They can either dismiss those or send the complaints to the Attorney General's Office for investigation.
While we are not sure what new rules they will implement for 2025, those changes could also come from the state lawmakers when they reconvene for the 2025 legislative session.
