Wild rebound, dominate Sharks in 52 road win
Nov 07, 2024
The Wild responded to their first lousy game of the season, beating the Sharks late Thursday, 5-2, at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., to start a short, three-game road trip that continues Friday against the Ducks in Anaheim.
Matt Boldy scored two goals, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 of 26 shots on goal as Minnesota rebounded from a 5-1 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday at Xcel Energy Center, the Wild’s second regulation loss this season.
Zach Bogosian, Mats Zuccarello and Jonas Brodin also scored goals, and Kirill Kaprizov had three assists to give him 24 points in the Wild’s 13 games as the Wild improved to 9-2-2 overall, and 6-1-1 on the road.
“I liked the mindset that we came into the game with,” Wild coach John Hynes told reporters after the game. “We played tighter, I thought we managed the puck well, had some more physicality to our game and throughout I thought it was consistent, we didn’t have a lot of lapses in the game.”
Fleury played in his 1,029th NHL game, tying Patrick Roy for third all-time and has won his past three starts. Center Freddy Gaudreau had an assist, extending his points streak to five games (2-5—7).
Macklin Celebrini, the first overall pick in June’s entry draft and the 2024 Hobey Baker Award winner at Boston University, scored twice for the Sharks and has three goals and four points in three NHL games. His second goal pulled the Sharks within 4-2 with 3:52 left in the game, and San Jose quickly pulled goaltender Vitek Vanecek for an extra attacker.
Boldly sealed the win when he broke free for an empty-netter with 1:25 left.
The Wild dominated the first period but could manage only one goal, Bogosian’s shot from the point that ricocheted off the skate of San Jose center Will Smith just 2:22 into the game.
They appeared to take a 2-0 early in the second period on Joel Eriksson Ek’s turnaround shot that beat Vitek Vanecek wide. But after a Sharks challenge, Eriksson Ek was deemed offside.
The successful challenge seemed to energize the Sharks, who immediately drew a tripping penalty (Brock Faber). And while the Wild killed that penalty, San Jose soon tied the game when Macklin Celebrini, the top overall pick in June’s entry draft, finished a rush to make it 1-1 at 4:36.
Fleury got a pad on it, but the bouncing puck found a way past the goaltender for Celebrini’s second goal in three NHL games.
Minnesota, however, answered.
After keeping the puck alive for Minnesota with strong play on the end boards, Kaprizov gathered a rebound in the left circle — off a Jared Spurgeon shot from the point — and and sent it cross ice behind him to Zuccarello, who was skating into the right circle and scooped it past Vanecek to make it 2-1 at 8:01.
Kaprizov’s assist was the first of three Thursday as he snapped a two-game points skid. He now has points in nine of the Wild’s 12 games this season (7-17–24).
“It was a good bounce-back game, too, for Kirill. I just liked his effort tonight,” Hynes told reporters in San Jose. ” … I think he was kind of indicative of this team’s mindset tonight, and we have to continue that on the road.”
Shortly thereafter, Ryan Hartman deflected a shot by Freddy Gaudreau past Vanecek for what looked like a 3-1 lead, but again, the Sharks challenged and Hartman was deemed offside.
But on the Wild’s third power-play opportunity, Boldy found a lane from the middle of the right circle to beat Vanecek 5 hole, and the Wild led 3-1 at 13:26.
Brodin scored from the high slot early in the third period for a 4-1 lead. His slap shot deflected off Sharks defender Cody Ceci at 6:02.
