Observances marking Veterans Day will be held in several south and southwest suburban communities. Alsip: The village and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 450 will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans Plaza, 11801 Pulaski. Lansing: The Lansing Veterans Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard will conduct a Veterans Day Ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial at Lansing Municipal Airport. The memorial is at the southeast corner of Burnham Avenue and Glenwood Lansing Road. New Lenox: The village, American Legion Post 1977 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9545 will gather at 11 a.m. Monday for a ceremony at the New Lenox Village Commons Veterans Memorial. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the first-floor rotunda of New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway. Oak Lawn: The social studies department of Oak Lawn High School will host a Veterans Day event from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the school, 9400 Southwest Highway. Several veterans, including Oak Lawn Mayor Terry Vorderer, will attend throughout the day so speak at individual stations with students about their experiences in the military. (Troy Stolt / for the Daily Southtown) Orland Park: The village will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Orland Park Civic Center 14750 S. Ravinia Ave. at 11 a.m. The event will also be streamed live on the village’s YouTube channel. After the ceremony, there will be a dedication of a new Veterans Center at 14671 West Ave. The center will house meetings for the American Legion Post 111, VFW Orland-Palos Post 2604, Veterans Voices and Disabled American Veterans in addition to the Orland Park Veterans Commission. Park Forest: The village will celebrate Veterans Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Freedom Hall and Central Park. The Veterans Commission event will include vendors, military recruiters, a Vietnam-era Huey Helicopter landing in Central Park, honor flights and commemorative T-shirt sales. Tinley Park: The village’s annual Veterans Day ceremony is at 10 a.m. Monday at the Gen. Patrick E. Rea Veterans Plaza, directly south of the 80th Avenue Metra train station, 18001 S. 80th Ave. It will include music by the Central Middle School band, short speeches, a gun salute and flag-raising ceremony. The ceremony will be streamed live on the village’s Facebook page.
