Filling the large halls of Henn Mansion, Euclid residents with green dot stickers and post-it notes in hand were able to start the process of shaping the future of what Sims Park might soon look like. The Sims Park Reimagined Community Open House, held on Nov. 6, asked residents’ input on what kind of recreational opportunities they would want held at the park, as well as how the child play area should be remodeled along with general questions on the park design itself. Christine McIntosh, Euclid’s Planning and Development Coordinator listens to feedback from a resident.(Frank Mecham- The News-Herald.) According to Christine McIntosh, Euclid’s planning and development coordinator, the reason they are holding the meeting now is because they have seen increased complaints about the aging infrastructure of the park and wanted to improve some of its features. “We have significant needs in the park right now,” McIntosh said. “The playground is pretty degraded and deteriorating, we can’t really find replacement parts for it, so if we are going to replace the playground, we want to look at the location, siting it in the park, should it change, could the park benefit from a change in the current layout. “We are trying to figure out what we want to do and then find the funding from there,” McIntosh said. “If we have a really good vision of the park, that makes grant proposals easier to write and receive, so it definitely has to come from the community first.” Notes with ideas from residents are seen on one board.(Frank Mecham- The News-Herald.) Recreation Director Mac Stephens said that they have been getting some positive feedback from the meeting and that he was excited to learn what residents would want from the renovation. “So far from the few people that I’ve talked to, people are excited about the changes,” Stephens said. “I think the big thing with this is to just get the community more involved and just really seek feedback from the community versus City Hall making all the decisions on this particular project.” Residents select from different ideas of potential park renovations. (Frank Mecham- The News-Herald.) “From the Recreation Department’s perspective, I am curious to see what type of programming that residents want to see in the park,” Stephens said. “A lot of our parks are passive, some are very active parks, Sims Park is kind of in between. “With lakefront development, obviously it’s going to bring more traffic to this area, so having the beach and eventually a restaurant, and having the path along the lakefront and pier and making actual improvements to the actual greenery of the park is going to bring a lot of opportunities,” he added. “So we have to determine what type of activities we want to provide to the public.” Residents talk about what they would want done at Sims Park. (Frank Mecham- The News-Herald.) According to city officials, once the data is collected from the open house, it will be shared with other departments within the city and then presented back to the public. McIntosh said a date has not been set on when the next information session will be held but it will be in the upcoming months.
