LAWRENCE – When the preseason began, the Notre Dame field hockey team needed a goalie. After some thought, Adriana Tattoli decided it was time to try something new. Well, 100 saves and a division championship later, Tattoli is playing the position like a veteran. While Tattoli was reaching a milestone, the No. 2 seeded Irish attack was on target, taking a 5-1 win over No. 7 St. Rose in the Non-Public South Jersey bracket on Thursday on ND’s Msgr. Nolan Field. The Irish advance to Monday’s semifinal where it will host No. 3 St. Joseph’s  (Hammonton), which defeated Bishop Eustace, 2-1. St. Joseph’s is 13-6-2 on the season. “I owe it all to my team, the defense was insane this year and it’s been such a fun season,’’ said Tattoli. “So glad to have hit a 100 and I’m proud of myself.’’ Tattoli certainly should be proud coming into the season with no experience in the cage and helping the Irish to a 15-3 record, a division championship and a spot in the Colonial Valley Conference tournament final. The Notre Dame offense has plenty to be proud of as well. Emma McVey had a pair of goals, Elana Ruppersberger had a goal and two assists, Ellie Marrone had a goal, Marie Conway had a pair of assists and Clementine Bowden had a goal and an assist. The Irish jumped to a 3-0 lead before St. Rose got on the board late in the third period. St. Rose’s goal was scored by Madison Mastrorilli off an assist from Maeve Ragan. The concern ND coach Cheryl Harris had was rust, as the Irish have not played in 12 days. “It’s been two weeks of practicing and we were a little nervous about being rusty,’’ said Harris. “But, we came out and did what we do best.’’ One that has been playing at a very high level for Notre Dame has been Elana Ruppersberger.  She has seven goals and six assists in ND’s last eight games. “This is my first year playing varsity,’’ said Ruppersberger. “This was a big game and we had to come out and get the win. This year means a lot to me being a senior and playing with these girls, it’s something special.’’ It didn’t take Harris long to realize Ruppersberger was something special too. “She is such a hard worker and we are so thrilled that she has been so successful,’’ said Harris. “She passes well and she gets open. She has come such a long way this season.’’ Ruppersberger had an assist on ND’s first goal by Bowden and then she scored the second off a Conway assist and then her assist on McVey’s first goal gave the Irish a 3-0 lead with 7:20 left in the third period. “The pressure goes up in the tournament games,’’ said Ruppersberger. “I don’t focus on the negative things and  I just put it all out there and there’s no looking back.’’ Tattoli can look back and recall what a great idea it was to ask the Coach to play in the goal. “The first day I started thinking about becoming goalie was the day I asked my coach,’’ said Tattoli, who was a forward last year. “I love it now, it’s a lot of fun and the best part is we are not done yet.’’ Neither is Tattoli’s save total. It just keep growing. St. Rose (8-11-1) 0 0 1 0 – 1 Notre Dame (15-3) 1 1 1 2 – 5 Goals: STR: Mastrorilli. ND: McVey 2, Ruppersberger, Marrone, Bowden. Assists: STR: Ragan.
