KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Independence Police Department is on the scene Thursday afternoon of a shooting involving an officer that has left two people dead.
Police responded to the incident around 1:45 p.m. at the Oval Springs Apartments in the area of M 291 Frontage Road and Larkspur Lane for a domestic disturbance call.
Police have not identified the two killed but family tells FOX4 the victim was a 4-month-old girl and her mother, who they say was holding a knife when police shot.
Family says the mother in crisis and armed with a knife didn't want to give her baby over to anyone else.
"The cops were there and then there were shots and I saw the baby being carried out with blood everywhere," apartment manager Carrie Lufkin said.
"I just seen all the police come in I ran outside the neighbor said a policeman ran up with a baby that was shot and they took off with the baby," neighbor Lincoln Clay said.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area at this time as they continue investigating the scene.
Independence police tell FOX4 no officers were injured during the incident.
Independence police aren't saying what led up to the shooting, how many officers fired, or whether it happened inside or outside the apartment.

While the family has questions about the shooting police say led to two deaths, police say they are hurting too.
"There's never an instance where this doesn't affect the community your first responders this isn't the outcome anyone wants," Independence Officer Kelley Rupert said.
Members of the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office are at the scene and have met with the independent investigation team overseeing the investigation.
A select group of detectives from eastern Jackson County law enforcement agencies have taken over the investigation as customary in an officer involved shooting.
FOX4 has a crew heading to the scene and will update as more information becomes available.
