BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) -- The wife of a Berkeley County sergeant killed while riding his motorcycle to work Monday morning shared what she remembers about her husbands life. Sgt. Devon Lindsay, a father of four, died as a result of the early morning crash on Old Gilliard Road in Ridgeville. Following the tragedy, Sgt. Lindsay's wife, Jazmin, spoke to News 2 about how she hopes to honor his legacy. One way she suggested is participating in a memorial ride for Devon, which will start at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 16 at Goose Creek High School. Jazmin and Devon Lindsay met in Goose Creek when they were only 12 years old. Jazmin explained she never would have known Devon would become a police officer growing up, but there could not have been anyone better for the job. "He loved his community he talked to all of our neighbors," Jazmin recalled. "He talked to everybody at the bodega. Every time I would be outside doing something, I would have a neighbor, or someone drive by and tell me to say hello to my husband." Jazmin said despite the stigma surrounding his job in law enforcement, Devon showed compassion to all during his time as a detention deputy at Hill Finklea Detention Center. "I can't tell you how many times we'd be in public, and someone that he knew from the inside would come up and say, 'I followed your advice' and 'I'm staying out of trouble, and I got that job, I was hoping for," said Jazmine. According to Jazmin, one of the reasons Devon was able to be so compassionate towards the inmates in his care was that when he was younger, he got into trouble himself. That was until one day, something made him want to change. "But there was a catalyst that made him go, "I want better for me." And after we've been married for a few years, I realized 'you've never told me what the catalyst was,' and I asked him, and he looked at me, and he kind of laughed and said, "I'm surprised you haven't figured it out,' and then he sat me down and he said that I was his catalyst," said Lindsay. Devon leaves behind four small children, one of whom is on the way, and a heartbroken community. Jazmin says you can honor Devon's legacy by having empathy for others. "Just live your life through kindness and consideration, and to not let prejudice or judgment or anything will rule how you see someone because you don't know a person based off of what they look like," said Lindsay.
