AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police officers shot and killed a man at a northwest Austin apartment complex Thursday morning, who Chief Lisa Davis said shot at APD first. The department plans to hold an updated press conference Friday to provide more details.
This happened at the MAA Canyon Creek apartments.
APD said outside agencies were pursuing a person when the subject stopped and carjacked a vehicle from a woman at the nearby Four Points shopping plaza. Police said the man later stole another vehicle from another part of the shopping center.
Officers learned the person had a shotgun and another weapon.
APD said officers found the carjacked vehicle at an apartment complex where the person kicked in the door to one of the units. As he began to leave, APD said officers asked him to stop, but he did not.
According to police, the man started to run, turned around and shot at police. APD said the officers shot back, killing the man. No officers were injured.

"It just really surprised me because this place is pretty quiet and nothing really happens around this area," said Connor Daniels, who lives at the apartment complex. He said he returned home this morning to find a swarm of police cars.
"Basically all taped off from the playground all the way to the apartments," he said.
Davis called the entire situation "tragic."
"This was a situation that none of us in law enforcement like to see occur," she said.
