Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Spencerport boys soccer
Nov 07, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Primetime 585 Spotlight Team is Spencerport boys soccer. The Rangers come off a victory in the Class AA Championship, defeating Brighton 2-0.
Spencerport entered the sectional tournament as the fourth seed and faced number-one ranked Churchville-Chili in the semifinals. After a scoreless regulation and two overtimes, the Rangers beat the defending sectional champions 4-2 in penalty kicks to advance to the final.
In the semifinals game, goalie Antonio Marsocci made a huge save on the Saints' second PK. In the championship, he held Brighton scoreless.
Earning the shutout victory, Marsocci credited his defense.
"It goes all to them," he said. "I got maybe three shots on goal, and none of them were real dangerous."
As they held Brighton scoreless, Spencerport's pair of goals were scored by Jaden Allen and Daniel Weiss.
The game was a chance for redemption as the Rangers fell to Churchville-Chili 3-2 in overtime in the Class AA final last season. For players on last year's team, like senior midfielder Casey Haas, the win was a moment of overcoming adversity.
"I just feel amazing, I'm just proud of everybody," said Haas. "We've been through so much together, we brought everything together in the final."
Head coach Jody Wyant also touched on his team overcoming challenges to come out with the win.
"We're used to adversity, so this is a team built on this. It's just made us stronger all the way through," he said. "And we talk about perseverance and persevering through the adversity. When you're facing tough times, you don't turn around and go back through it. You just keep on charging forward."
Congratulations to Coach Wyant and the Spencerport boys soccer team on earning the Spotlight Team of the week!
