Central Jersey Group III: Hopewell Valley girls soccer cruises past WWP North in quarterfinals
Nov 07, 2024
HOPEWELL TWP. — When West Windsor North’s Prema Budhiraja scored on Thursday morning, it marked just the fifth time the Hopewell Valley girls soccer team had conceded a goal during its current 19-game unbeaten run.
Unfortunately for West Windsor North, that goal came after Hopewell Valley (18-2-2) had already scored six of its own and coach John McGinley had cleared his bench.
Behind a scintillating six-goal, first-half explosion in which it played about as well as a team possibly can, Hopewell Valley cruised past West Windsor North, 6-1, in the Central Jersey Group III quarterfinals.
Next up for the top-seeded Valley Girls will be a home game on Monday against fifth-seeded Lawrence, which also advanced on Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Freehold Boro.
With only five goals conceded since Sept. 9, Hopewell Valley’s defensive strength obviously speaks for itself. What has made the team even more formidable is an improving passing game that leads to all kind of good scoring opportunities.
“The goal is to get better as the season goes along,” said McGinley. “We have done that by playing together as a team. It’s a huge part of our success.”
Leading the way with two goals apiece were Elizabeth Buchert and Meg Kurian.
A sophomore who has 16 goals on the year and is possibly headed to finish as one of the program’s all-time leading scorers, Buchert started the goal-scoring barrage with a pretty long shot over the keeper’s head. This came 11 minutes into the first half and was set up by a well-placed assist by Katie Yademic.
Approximately 10 minutes later, Buchert also scored the third goal when she took a pass from Kurian and calmly beat North keeper Jenna Manolakos with a shot from the middle of the box.
In between Buchert’s goals, Kurian opened her account with a well-placed short shot from the middle of the box. A talented freshman who has eight goals on the year, Kurian also scored a second goal to give the Valley girls five goals in the space of 13 minutes.
Hopewell Valley also scored on a long shot just under the crossbar by Katherine Reinhart and when Barrett Upson pounced on a loose ball and directed it home from close range.
With the exception of Budhiraja’s goal that ended a string of five straight Hopewell Valley clean sheets, very little of note happened in a second half in which the Valley girls showed no interest in running up the score.
“It was nice to see the way we came out firing and operating on all cylinders,” said McGinley. “Our girls have worked very hard to develop a good chemistry with each other.”
