HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- The jersey worn by a 15-year-old Hopewell student who died after suffering a medical emergency at football practice in August was officially retired during a Junior Varsity football game Wednesday night. According to Hopewell City Public Schools, 15-year-old Jayvion Taylor's jersey was officially retired during a JV football game held on the night of Wednesday, Nov. 6. "Surrounded by family and friends, this special moment honored his memory and passion for the game he loved," Hopewell Schools said in its post on Facebook. According to officials, Taylor died after he collapsed from a medical emergency during football practice on Aug. 5. According to a statement issued by Hopewell Schools on Aug. 6, the team was at practice and about 40 minutes into light drills, following standard safety protocols. After returning from a water break, Taylor collapsed about 10 feet from a coach. Hopewell Schools said two coaches were in the area and immediately performed CPR and called 911. An AED was on grounds, but the paramedics arrived promptly and prior to the AED being used. According to officials, the paramedics provided additional medical support and transported Taylor to the hospital, where he later died. On Aug. 7, a prayer vigil was held at Hopewell High School's gym to honor the life of Taylor.
