NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man with an extensive criminal history, including dozens of arraignments, is now facing eight additional charges after a shooting outside a local bar, police announced Thursday.
On Sunday, Oct. 27, officers responded to reports of gunfire near Redwood Saloon off Cove Road, where they found multiple shell casings and a live round.
A week later, police searched the apartment of 43-year-old Jordan Caetano, discovering a backpack containing an unsecured large-capacity handgun, a high-capacity feeding device and 255 rounds of ammunition.
Caetano was arrested and charged with the following:
Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license
Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling
Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
Attempting to commit assault and battery by discharge
Possession of a large-capacity firearm and feeding device
Possession of ammo without an FID card
Improperly storing a large-capacity firearm
Possession of a large-capacity firearm
Police noted that Caetano is "no stranger" to law enforcement, with 84 adult arraignments and a recent four-to-six-year prison sentence for armed robbery. Since his release, he was also arrested on a domestic violence charge, though he only received a suspended sentence.
"A job well done by all," New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira said. "However, it’s unfortunate that we had to use extensive time and resources to re-arrest this man who should not have been on the streets in the first place."
