FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A former Fall River man was convicted Wednesday of orchestrating a violent attack on a 17-year-old nearly two decades ago.
Jorge Lamas, 37, was sentenced to five to seven years in state prison for armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.
Lamas, who was 18 at the time, was part of a group that lured the 17-year-old to a secluded path near the Rolling Green Apartments, now known as the Southwinds Apartments, on July 19, 2006, the DA's office said in a release.
There, Lamas and others struck the victim and slashed him in the face, using beer bottles as weapons, according to prosecutors. Once he fell to the ground, the victim was punched, kicked, and robbed of his sneakers and phone.
Prosecutors said Lamas threatened the victim, telling him not to contact police. The victim suffered significant injuries and required over 40 stitches for severe facial lacerations.
Although the victim was able to identify Lamas to police, prosecutors said Lamas fled the state in 2008 before trial. He was apprehended in California last June and brought back to Massachusetts to face charges in this case.
