LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – A Lexington family is searching for answers after a member in their family was injured when allegedly struck by a car while walking down the sidewalk. Over a week has passed since the incident, and the family says they still don’t know who the driver is.
Gerri Fawcette said she was driving to pick up her grandson last Monday when she unexpectedly found him on the roadside surrounded by emergency responders.
“And I saw the emergency vehicles so I slowed down like I normally would, but you know you have to look to see what’s going on, so I looked and I said to myself that looks like Elijah, my grandson. And I kept going a little further and I looked again, that looks like my grandson,” said Fawcette.
Authorities report that the juvenile was hit by a car while walking along the sidewalk near Loudon and Limestone. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is now back in school, though on crutches.
“It was just shocking, like oh my God, you just don’t expect that you know, especially to have someone just take off when you hit a child,” said Fawcette.
Fawcette said her family is working with investigators as they continue searching for the driver involved. According to law enforcement, the driver did not stop after the accident.
The family is urging the driver to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials ask anyone with information to contact the Lexington Police Department or leave an anonymous tip with Bluegrass Crime Stoppers.
