BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University police have received reports from Bloomington students who are receiving racist text messages that invoke slavery, sent by an unknown person.
IUPD was contacted on Wednesday by an IU Bloomington student who received a text message with what they described as "racially-biased content." The student also advised that multiple other classmates have received similar texts.
FOX59/CBS4 has received a screenshot of the text message, which invokes slavery. The message tells the student that they have been "selected to pick cotton at the Yuma Valley Plantation."
"Our Executive Slaves will come get you in a White Dodge Van," the text reads. "Please throw away any contraband before you enter the plantation. You are in Plantation Group B."
The full text, edited to remove the recipient's name, can be seen below:

IUPD said that text messages containing similar types of content have been reported nationwide and confirmed that the FBI is investigating. The FBI sent us the following statement Thursday afternoon:
"The FBI is aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.
As always, we encourage members of the public to report threats of physical violence to local law enforcement authorities."
- Federal Bureau of Investigation
FOX outlets in Detroit and Atlanta have reported similar messages being sent this week.
Anyone who has received similar messages is being asked to submit a tip at FBI.gov. IUPD was unable to provide any more information and referred further questions to the FBI.
