SEVASTOPOL, Wis. (WFRV) - With Veteran's Day right around the corner, a local Door County elementary school used a penny wars fundraiser to raise money for a local VFW Post. Through a program called "Community of Caring," students at Sevastopol Elementary School participated in a penny war to raise funds for the local VFW Post 3088. "As a school, we put forth efforts regularly to do something for our Veterans," officials with the Sevastopol School District stated in a release. The people helping homeless along Wisconsin’s lakeshore The school was divided into two teams for the friendly competition, with students knowing in advance where the proceeds would go towards. 4th Graders Ethan Brandenberg, Zendaya Tripplet, Lainee Pascke and Gabe Shannon present a check to Veterans from VFW Post 3088 (Sevastopol School District) Sevastopol Elementary then presented Joe Knaapen and William Graf, from the post, a $1,111.11 check. The amount symbolizes Armistice Day - 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month. "We were excited to learn that the funds will go to help various projects in our area that support Veterans – like those suffering from PTSD and Veterans in need of service and assistance. Our students (and staff) are pleased to make an impact for our local Veterans," school district officials said.
