FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- With Thanksgiving three weeks away and Christmas not far behind, The Salvation Army is working to make sure its holiday programs are successful in order to help people in need. One of those programs is the Red Kettle Campaign, which enlists the help of bell ringers to be stationed at stores across Fort Wayne for monetary donations. However, The Salvation Army has struggled in recent years to amass an appropriate number of bell ringers. So far, 2024 is no different. "As we have seen an increased need in folks needing assistance this year, we have also seen an increased need for bell ringers, and we've been struggling to get folks to sign up," said Capt. Dena Smith, a corps officer with The Salvation Army. On top of that, Capt. Smith said The Salvation Army has to start the campaign later than normal this year because many locations where the organization sets up will not allow bell ringers before Thanksgiving. The Salvation Army is working to bring in more volunteers by spreading the word and dispelling any misconceptions people may have about the experience. "I think that sometimes there may be some misunderstanding that you are obligated to really lengthy amounts of time at the kettle, but you're not," Capt. Smith said. "Like I said, you can do as little as two hours." Capt. Smith said those who sign up can choose their location and times, as well as whether they want to do it alone or with friends or family. "When we help others and give to others, we feel good about ourselves and it's a good experience," Capt. Smith said. "Because the red kettles have been there for so many years and it's so iconic with Christmas, it very easily can become a part of what your Christmas experience is." The Salvation Army is also accepting applications for paid bell ringers, although having people volunteer is more beneficial for the organization since it allows The Salvation Army to have more money put aside for its day-to-day operations and other programs. If the Red Kettle Campaign falls short of its goal, those other programs could be at risk. "The Red Kettle Campaign is our major fundraiser that funds us throughout the entire year. About 70% of our total budget comes from that," Capt. Smith said. The Red Kettle Campaign starts Nov. 25 and runs until Christmas Eve. The Salvation Army will also host a "Red Kettle Kickoff Breakfast" fundraiser at its Clinton Street location on Nov. 20. from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Those interested in signing up to volunteer can sign up for shifts online, and those who wish to help The Salvation Army in other ways can find more information on the organization's website.
