On Thursday morning, the Colorado State Patrol identified the suspect as 43-year-old Stephen Robert Geer. He was arrested on Wednesday. These Colorado roads will be impacted the most by November snowstorm Geer was arrested on the following charges: Vehicular homicide while driving under the influence of alcohol or one or more drugs or both. Geer appeared in court Thursday morning where his bond was set at $250,000 cash surety. He will remain under pretrial supervision and have electronic and sobriety monitoring. FOX31's Courtney Fromm was in court where Geer's attorney said he had never been arrested before and that the cause of the crash was due to black ice in which Geer was not able to stop his car. The attorney said Geer only had one 16 oz beer at a brewery after work before driving. The attorney said Geer went to the Colorado School of Mines and received a PhD, he was also an employee. FOX31 received a statement from the Colorado School of Mines, which doesn't specifically name Geer but does say, "one of our employees was involved in the fatal accident in Golden on November 6." The letter from Mines went on to say: "The Mines community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Golden police officer yesterday and injuries to a second officer while they were responding to a crash on Colorado 58." He is expected to appear in court on Nov. 14 for official charges. Officer killed, another seriously injured in Hwy 58 crash Geer's arrest stems from a crash that happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 58, just east of Washington Avenue in Golden, at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. CSP said officers were working on another crash at the time that involved a Tacoma and a Subaru. One officer was in a police cruiser while two others, identified as Evan Dunn and Bethany Grusing, were managing the crash site along with two people involved in the original crash. Denver weather: What to expect as snow falls through end of week According to an arrest affidavit, obtained by FOX31, a black Mazda, driven by Geer, crashed into the back of the Tacoma and continued into the back of the Subaru. The Subaru then hit both the officers and the two people involved in the original crash. Dunn, 33, was pinned under the Subaru. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Grusing and both people from the other crash suffered serious injuries. Joe Harvey, chief of the Golden Police Department, spoke about Dunn during a press conference Wednesday night. “He’s an amazing human being, he has had a long stellar career in the military, where he flew Blackhawk helicopters, and served as a commander,” Harvey said. Dunn is survived by his wife, sister and parents. In the department, Dunn is survived by 71 members of his Golden family who said they love and care for him deeply.
