Where has SDGE shutoff power in San Diego County?
Nov 07, 2024
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego Gas & Electric has shutoff power for over 1,000 backcountry residents as of Thursday morning due to strong Santa Ana winds that are creating dry and blustery conditions.
The weather is considered critical in regard to local wildfire risks. In fact, the National Weather Service has issued what's known as a Red Flag Warning for San Diego County's inland valleys. This means conditions are highly unfavorable for prescribed burns and may lead to especially dangerous wildfire growth.

On Wednesday, SDG&E began shutting off power in some areas as a means to reduce the risk of fire danger. The Public Safety Power Shutoffs, also referred to as PSPS, are approved by state regulators and are a safety measure of last resort to mitigate fire risks during extreme weather situations.
According to SDG&E's Outage Map, more than 1,200 customers remained with out power as of Thursday morning. The impacted areas include Descanso, Alpine, Jamul, Live Oak Springs, Boulevard, Jacumba Hot Springs, Campo, and Potrero.
SDG&E customers in these areas can take advantage of Community Resource Centers that have been set up by the utility company to support impacted areas. The centers provide Wi-Fi, medical device and phone charging stations, air conditioning, and other support services. Those centers can be found at the following locations:
-- Boulevard Community Resource Center: 39223 CA-94, Boulevard, CA
-- Descanso Branch Library: 9545 River Dr. Descanso, CA
-- Potrero Community Center: 24550 CA-94, Potrero, CA
SDG&E has also reminded the public never to approach downed power lines and to report any such incidents immediately by calling 911 or SDG&E’s customer service at 800-411-7343.
It's unknown at this time if additional areas in the region's backcountry will have power shutoff amid the Red Fag Warning. For real-time updates on outages, customers can visit SDG&E’s website at sdge.com/outage.
