(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) — A mountain lion was spotted in the Security-Widefield area early in the morning on Thursday, Nov. 7, according to a FOX21 News viewer who captured the cougar on her home's camera at about 1:30 a.m. According to Angela H., the video was captured near Caballero and Sullivan Avenues. FOX21 reached out to Bill Vogrin, Southeast Region Public Information Officer for Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), who said it is very rare to see a mountain lion as they are elusive, shy, and avoid being spotted. According to CPW's 'Living with Mountain Lions' page, the statewide population of mountain lions, not including kittens, is around 3,800 to 4,400. As seen in the video above, panthers are easily distinguished from other wild cat species because of their long tails. Vogrin reminded homeowners to secure their pets and to watch their children closely if a mountain lion has been spotted in their area. He also said to never feed deer near your home, as mountain lions follow the prey. "Do not attract deer to your yard, even in urban areas, as this is the mountain lions' main food source," wrote CPW. "If you find a dead deer covered or hidden, it might be a mountain lion kill, so avoid the area." Homeowners should also be extra vigilant during the mornings and evenings and should eliminate hiding places like bushes and tall grassy areas, according to CPW. CPW: Crossing paths with mountain lions Walk or hike in groups Making noise to avoid surprising a lion Carry a sturdy walking stick and keep children and pets close Never approach a feeding mountain lion or one with kittens Give them an escape route Speak calmly, move slowly, and avoid running Raise your arms, open your jacket, and pick up small children or pets to make yourself appear larger According to CPW, mountain lion attacks on people are rare, "with fewer than a dozen deaths in North America in more than 100 years." If you see a mountain lion in your area, CPW wants to know about it. Visit cpw.state.co.us/contact-us to find a wildlife office nearest you.
