Six area players and three area coaches took home top honors as the Northeast Lakes All-District football team was unveiled on Nov. 7 by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. Mentor coach Matt Gray was named the Division I coach of the year, Geneva coach Don Shymske was named the D-III coach of the year and Kirtland coach Tiger LaVerde was named the D-VI coach of the year. Additionally, Mentor’s Scotty Fox was named the D-I offensive player of the year, Gilmour’s Cooper Panteck the D-III offensive player of the year, Kenston’s Sam Meeks the D-III defensive player of the year, Perry’s Walter Moses the D-IV offensive player of the year, Kirtland’s Matthew Kahley the D-VI offensive player of the year and Kirtland’s Tyler Turk the D-VI defensive player of the year. Northeast Lakes All-District selections were made by media members from The News-Herald, cleveland.com, The (Lorain) Morning-Journal, the Ashtabula Star Beacon and the Elyria Chronicle-Telegraph. The all-district team is the first step in a process that eventually leads to All-Ohio honors bestowed by the OPSMA (previously known as the OPSWA). All-district honors are based on regular-season statistics only. Mentor’s Fox — a West Virginia recruit — completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,170 yards with 28 touchdowns to six interceptions. Gilmour’s Panteck completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 2,412 yards and 32 touchdowns with only two interceptions. Kenston’s Meeks had 56 tackles, 23 TFLs and 6.5 sacks this season. He is the career sack leader at Kenston with 17. Perry’s Moses — a returning All-Ohioan and Toledo commit — threw for 1,572 yards and 21 touchdowns to go with 122 rushing yards and three touchdowns despite Perry’s starters playing in only 26 of 40 quarters because of running clock games. Kirtland’s Kahley graded out 92 percent this season and is the top lineman for the defending Division VI state champion Hornets. On the defensive side, Turk had 41 tackles, 11 TFLs and six sacks for the Hornets. As for the coaches who received top honors, Gray led Mentor to a 10-0 regular season record, Shymske led Geneva to a 9-1 record and LaVerde led Kirtland to a 10-0 slate. Dozens of area athletes received recognition, whether it was first team, second team or honorable mention.
