Colorful designs have been added to a new structure that soon will become an active part of Fairport Harbor Village’s water distribution system. Two sides of the village’s new water tower recently were adorned with images of lighthouses that are placed beside the name Fairport Harbor, which is printed in black capital letters. The multi-colored lighthouses, on the northern and southern sides of the tower’s bowl, are the same design as what Fairport Harbor Village uses in its official logo. That logo appears in places such as the village’s official website and Facebook page. In addition, the typeface of the capital letters spelling out Fairport Harbor on the water tower and in the village’s logo appear to be identical. The stem and bowl of the tower are painted white. A colorful logo that recently was added to two sides of the bowl on Fairport Harbor Village’s new water tower is shown on Nov. 4. It took about six months to construct the 155-foot tall water tower, which is located behind the village’s Service Department at 1340 East St. This water tower, which has a 250,000-gallon capacity, will replace a similar but smaller structure that is based on Orchard Street in the village. (Bill DeBus – The News-Herald) It took about six months to construct the 155-foot tall water tower, which is located behind the village’s Service Department at 1340 East St. Fairport Harbor authorized construction of the new water tower as one of four projects linked to the village’s plan to purchase treated bulk water from the city of Painesville. The village began receiving water from Painesville in October of last year. In early 2023, Village Council approved bids from contractors to conduct the four projects, which were aimed at changing Fairport Harbor’s system of water distribution. One of those endeavors involved building a new, elevated water storage tank with a 250,000-gallon capacity, which would replace a similar, but smaller existing structure in the village. The current water tower  — which was built in 1935 and has a 200,000-gallon capacity — is based on Orchard Street. That tower stands 147 feet tall, which is 8 feet shorter than its eventual successor. Last year, Village Council approved a contract with Great Lakes Crushing Ltd. of Willowick to construct the new tower and demolish the old one. Fairport Harbor Village Engineer Andrew Lubonovic said the next step for the new tower is providing it with electrical power. “Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. is scheduled to begin their work in December, but has not given a time frame for completion,” he said. “The electrical work will be followed by filling the tank with water and performing startup.” Once the new tower is online, the decommissioning of the Orchard Street tower can begin, Lubonovic said. “We have that scheduled in the spring, but the timeline could change depending on how long CEI needs to bring power to the new tower,” he said.
