LIMA, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8 is checking in with Election results outside of Monroe County, specifically the race for Livingston County District Attorney.
Republican Ashley Williams has been elected to replace incumbent and Democrat Greg McCaffrey.
Williams' victory saw a slim four percent margin. In her interview with News 8, she shared plans to instill a zero-tolerance policy for crimes involving violence against law enforcement and develop a more proactive approach to address issues such as drug crimes.
"I believe that criminals need to be held accountable, and I believe that the punishment needs to fit the crime, and there needs to be a deep dive for all my employees as to evaluating on a case-by-case basis, what's appropriate and moving forward, to make Livingston County as safe as possible," Williams said.
Williams tells me she has 12 years of experience under her belt. She formerly served as Assistant District Attorney in Livingston, Rensselaer, and Utica counties, as well as the Department of Social Services Attorney for Livingston County.
"Seeing the impact of some of the policies or lack thereof for the follow through and the effects on the community, and then it was, 'What can I do to improve upon those deficiencies, and formulating a platform and a plan?," Williams said.
Williams believes she has a fresh perspective for Livingston County following incumbent Greg McCaffrey emphasizing a proactive approach when it comes to change.
"Addressing some of the drug issues, some of the juvenile based crimes in our community, and understanding the underlying reasons behind those are and being able to work again with substance abuse providers, mental health, other community partnerships, in order to kind of develop an approach to identify the issues, work collaboratively together and find solutions for the community and offer services in order to mitigate those issues before they become crimes," Williams said.
