Bills players excited for return of Jordan Phillips
Nov 06, 2024
With Dawuane Smoot and DaWayne Carter on injured reserve, the Bills signed a pair of familiar faces to their roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Colts.
Defensive tackles Quinton Jefferson and Jordan Phillips each signed one-year deals in Buffalo, but it isn't their first time with the team. Jefferson was a Bill in 2020 where he had 23 tackles and three sacks. The 2024 season marks Phillips' third stint in Buffalo, most recently in 2022-2023, where he put up 35 tackles and four sacks in those two seasons.
When discussing his return to the Bills, Phillips put it simply.
"I'm an acquired taste, and they like my taste," he said.
As the Bills organization keeps bringing the veteran back, players seem to like his return, too. Among those excited is Terrel Bernard, who has a special connection with Phillips.
"Big Phil is awesome, he's one of the first vets that kind of took me under his wing when I got here," Bernard said. "My locker was actually right next to his at St. John Fisher at training camp, so I got to spend a lot of time with him and got pretty close with him and his family."
Greg Rousseau was also in Buffalo during Phillips' most recent time as a Bill, appreciating the familiar face back in the locker room.
"It's dope, you know, a familiar face," Rousseau said. "Great dude, great player. We've had a lot of time together over the years, so it's always cool to have a familiar face back in here."
Phillips comes from the Cowboys after being released on Tuesday. The defensive tackle seemed to quickly get adjusted back in Orchard Park, touching on the feeling of being wanted by a team.
"Being actually wanted is a hell of a drug," Phillips said. "You can do a lot for people when it's in the right environment."
The "right environment" for Phillips might just be back in Buffalo. In 2019, during his first stint with the Bills, he was third in sacks by an NFL defensive tackle with 9.5.
Despite his statistical success in Buffalo, Phillips credited the people within the organization that made his return feel right.
"It's a great organization, great people, familiar with it," Phillips said. "When you come in, you see a lot of smiling faces, so that's a big deal."
While Phillips acknowledged those in the building that make a difference, Bernard acknowledged Phillips' skill as a dominant part of the defensive front.
"He's been a lot of places, he's played a lot of good football," Bernard said. "His physicality, he's a real big dude, obviously. Takes up blocks, makes plays in the run game, pass rushes well."
Despite being only signed for one year, Phillips sees a future in Buffalo. With 10 years in the NFL already under his belt, he sees himself retiring as a Bill.
"I just want to give them enough to stick. Finish my career here and that's it," Phillips said. "So whatever I've got to do to do that and be here for the tenure, that's what I'm going to try to do."
With his official arrival on Wednesday back to the Bills, Bernard attested to Phillips' experience and presence in the locker room.
"Just his energy and who is as a person, as a man, as a teammate. I think any time you can get a vet like that in the room and in the building, it's going to be awesome for us," Bernard said. "Seeing him this morning was good, man, it was like a breath of fresh air."
