Incumbents lead Central Valley congressional races: Results could have national impact
Nov 06, 2024
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The impacts of three Central Valley congressional races could ripple across the United States.
Democrats need to flip just four seats to take control of the House of Representatives, so the winner of Districts 13, 21 and 22 could shift the balance of power.
District 13
District 13 covers parts of Fresno, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties.
As of Wednesday evening, Republican incumbent John Duarte is leading the race against Democrat Assemblymember Adam Gray.
“We do go to a lot of Democrat doors and knock because there's a lot of Democrats that are coming to the Republican Party that want to see a change. They want to get back to the policies that kept grocery prices low, gas affordable, homes affordable and job wages going up,” Duarte said.
Although Duarte is leading in the district, Gray is leading in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties.
He has called the current House of Representatives the least productive Congress in U.S. history.
He hopes to change that.
“I'm proud of my record in the state legislature in California. Caucus infrastructure, water, education, health care. These are the priorities that were my priorities for ten years serving this community in the state legislature, and they'll be my priorities going forward if elected to the United States Congress,” Gray said.
District 21
District 21 covers parts of Fresno and Tulare Counties.
As of Wednesday evening, Democrat incumbent Jim Costa has a slight lead against Republican Michael Maher. He is only leading by about 1,000 votes.
Maher says he still has hope and plans to address the economy if he wins.
“How much our health care costs, how much food and groceries are, utility prices, everything is continuing to rise uncontrollably, and talking about how we can actually solve those issues and actually deliver more meaningful solutions,” Maher said.
Costa hopes to hold the lead, though and says he trusts the voters to make the right decision.
He says if he’s reelected, his goal will be to “build on a body of work that I've been involved in for many years, improving the investment in our infrastructure, water, transportation, broadband and health care.”
District 22
District 22 covers parts of Tulare, Kings and Kern Counties.
Republican incumbent David Valadao holds the lead against Democrat Rudy Salas.
The race is a 2022 rematch, where Valadao won by a slim margin.
Although Valadao is in the lead, the district has a 42% Democratic majority. It is currently the second most Democrat-leaning district in the nation to have a Republican representative.
Salas hopes to change that.
“At the end of the day, it's about - you want somebody that's doing something for you, that's making a positive difference in your life. And so I want to continue to do that on a bigger stage in Congress, making sure that our tax dollars are coming back and working for us and for our families,” Salas said.
Valadao is seeking his sixth term, and was first elected to the seat in 2012.
He has only lost one reelection bid since.
He says he feels good about where the numbers stand, but will wait to celebrate until the final results are announced.
“I think I fit the district pretty well. I mean, I think being the son of immigrants, connected to the community, obviously, it’s a big ag district, and it's something I think makes a difference. And I think that helps me in my district,” Valadao said.
