SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Savannah Mayor Van Johnson gave the annual State of the City Address Wednesday night, which addressed the city’s accomplishments and challenges. Johnson said the city of Savannah is renewed, refreshed and ready for the next era. He told News 3 that era begins with housing. According to the city, nearly 40% of Savannah households are struggling to afford housing. “We must build more housing options, we must boost Savannah affordable housing fund investments and implement policies and incentives that encourage affordable housing development,” said Johnson. He said several projects are in the works, including Legacy Savannah located at the former Coastal Empire fairgrounds. “Since 2020, the city and its partners have invested over $300 million across Savannah, improving housing access for over 2,500 households,” Johnson said. The city has been questioned about the durability of the stormwater drainage system, as several severe weather events this summer showed the need for sturdier infrastructure. Johnson said the city will continue to invest in stormwater upgrades. “Over the next five years, we'll invest $42 million into Springfield Canal upgrades," Johnson said. "...$30 million from the FEDS, $12 million from us directly benefiting the historic Carver Village and Cloverdale neighborhoods. Johnson said safety continues to be top priority. He said citywide, violent crimes have decreased 21% and property crime is down 18% from last year. The city also granted $1.5 million to the Savannah Police Department, giving officers a 5% pay increase and providing $100,000 for hiring bonuses. “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success,” Johnson said.
