PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man will spend more than a decade behind bars for shooting a 32-year-old man in 2022, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha announced. Jashua Adames Torres, 24, was sentenced Friday to 22 years at the ACI with 13 to serve, followed by 22 years of probation. Following a four-day jury trial, Torres was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, carrying a pistol without a license, and firing in a compact area. Torres was found guilty of shooting the victim three times on Bodell Avenue in Providence after an argument on July 23, 2022, prosecutors said. Officers arrived at the scene to find the man bleeding profusely. Prosecutors said the officers applied a tourniquet to his leg before he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. The victim told officers he was targeted in an attempted robbery by an unknown group of people, according to prosecutors. Police followed a trail of blood leading back to Bodell Avenue and located four men, including Torres. Torres was arrested the next day after investigators received surveillance video that showed Torres and the victim arguing before he pointed a handgun and fired at him. “This defendant’s willingness to use a deadly weapon so indiscriminately is as shocking as it is all-too common,” Neronha said. “The more we hold accountable those who commit these senseless acts of gun violence, the more we can deter others from committing similar offenses."
