West Iredell High School Prepares For Final Game, Bag Restrictions

STATESVILLE, N.C. — “We’ve had three good days of practice here, and we feel good about it,” says Sean Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald is wrapping up his first year as head coach with the West Iredell High School football team.
“I’m excited just to be a part of a fanbase and a community that loves football and supports this group here,” the former Mars Hill standout says.
While the Warriors won’t make the playoffs this year, they are adding an extra week to their season after Hurricane Helene canceled a game back in September.
“I think anytime you can play past Daylight Saving Time is a win,” says Fitzgerald.
And his players are excited for the extra opportunity to play in front of their home crowd.
“I’m so glad,” says Ex-Avier Peet, a junior safety and wide receiver, “More people can watch. You can show off your potential, basically make a name for yourself.”
It’s been a season of change – West Iredell has gone through five head coaches in the past 10 seasons – and there will be another adjustment this week. Fans won’t be allowed to bring outside bags inside the stadium. The policy, implemented county-wide, is one made in the name of safety.
Additional Safety Protocols Issues for Athletic Events
“I think it’s an awesome idea,” says Neal Patterson, who is the father of a player on the team.
But football parents like Patterson don’t seem to mind.
“I don’t think it’s a big deal. I think it’s safe. I think it ensures the safety of everybody who comes through the door.”
