Defensive coordinator Joe Woods to make play calls Sunday for New Orleans Saints

METAIRIE, La. (BRPROUD) — Now that the Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen, who was the team's defensive play-caller, there’s a rearrangement to the defensive coaching staff under interim head coach Darren Rizzi.
On Wednesday, Rizzi announced pass rush specialist Brian Young will take over the defensive line room and defensive line coach Todd Grantham is moving to a senior advisor to defensive coordinator Joe Woods.
Woods will handle the defensive play-calling duties Sunday, a gameday change since Allen has been the primary play-caller since 2015. The Saints aren’t unfamiliar with Woods making the calls, he’s called the defense during training camp.
Safety Tyrann Mathieu spoke highly of Woods and thinks he’ll put the defense back in the positions they haven’t felt much this season.
New Orleans Saints believe in interim head coach Darren Rizzi amidst losing streak
"I think Joe Woods has coached in this league a lot," Mathieu said. "I think he's proven. He called a lot of plays for us in training camp, too. So, I kind of already know what type of game we'll be playing. I do think that Joe, he'll find a way to weaponize us. I don't think we've felt like that. We don't always feel like hunters. Sometimes it feels like you're being hunted. I think Joe really kind of turn that page and, and let us do what we do best, man. Like, let us hunt. I'm looking forward to it. I believe in him. I think he'll do a great job."
Rizzi provided an update Wednesday on wide receiver Chris Olave after he suffered his second concussion this season and fifth documented on Sunday. He said Olave is taking things day by day and is "thoroughly" going through the concussion protocol process.
Rizzi also noted they're worried about Olave, the person, right now.
