Kevin McCarthy and Donald Trump: Will McCarthy be in the Trump Admin?
Nov 06, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A second Trump presidency is likely to have implications for Central Valley politicians, which leads to the question -- could they be tabbed to join the Trump cabinet?
One likely candidate? Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
The former Speaker hasn't been out and about in Kern County politics since his historic ouster, but McCarthy could once again represent us in Washington D.C. -- this time, in the White House, alongside the 47th President.
"This is a magnificent victory for the American people that will allow us to make America great again," said former President Donald Trump as he declared victory in his bid to return to the White House.
Shortly after that speech of fervor, one of his close allies -- and a name all too familiar to Bakersfield -- embarked on a media tour: Kevin McCarthy.
From FOX News to CBS News and the TODAY Show, McCarthy kept himself busy.
On the TODAY Show, McCarthy spoke highly of the former president: "President Trump has the 10,000 hours experience. He's much better prepared to go in the job. He probably won't waste one day."
McCarthy added, "I've had calls from world leaders of other countries excited about what transpired here. Why? Because they think it brings stability to the world."
It's a sign in the world of politics McCarthy may be eyeing a job in the Trump administration.
"I would bet on Kevin ending up in a very important role in the Trump administration because he was always very loyal to former President Trump," said Central Valley Political Strategist Tal Eslick.
"[McCarthy] could be part of a group of people acting as surrogates for the incoming administration, it appears to be. It could also be -- and we've seen this with other people -- to try to convey his message of what he can bring to the administration. And I don't know which of it is."

As we've long reported here at 17 News, McCarthy has long been loyal to Trump, with Trump typically reciprocating that political dedication and partnership.
But just how tight the Trump-McCarthy alliance will be remains to be seen -- Trump offered no aid during perhaps the most alarming part of McCarthy's political career -- his ouster from the speakership.
"[McCarthy has] got a lot of choices," said 17 News Republican Political Contributor Cathy Abernathy. "If he chooses to go to the administration, it'd be terrific for this area, especially if it's the energy department or right in the White House, but we'll see."
Only time will tell how Trump may bring "my Kevin" back onto Capitol Hill.
"There's probably the roles that Kevin McCarthy wants, there's the roles he would be good at, and there's the roles that the president would ultimately entice him or encourage him to take…" explained Tal Eslick.
"Obviously you have cabinet secretaries, roles like his chief of staff, but there are a bunch of other roles that are very impactful to the San Joaquin Valley, like the Department of Energy, Bureau of Reclamation, as it relates to water, and the Department of the Interior."
Eslick added, "You have the role of influence and what sort of matters in politics like the chief of staff role, which I know former Speaker McCarthy has been discussed in the past as a potential for that role…"
Strategist Tal Eslick says here in the Valley, there's already behind-the-scenes jockeying...like with former Tulare Congressman Devin Nunes.
"He currently runs Truth Social, which is Trump's social media platform, Eslick noted."
Eslick also said those behind political campaigns, like campaign staffers, are often good candidates.
"[As for McCarthy] he's a very good vote counter, he's a very good retail politician with the legislative branch, and I think that would extend to the Senate as well," Eslick commented.
But it's not just the Central Valley we should keep an eye on.
Per Eslick, "What is Elon Musk's role? Why is Dana White all of a sudden in the conversation as well?"
17 News reached out to Kevin McCarthy for comment but did not hear back as of airtime Wednesday evening.
