BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Residents of Arvin have made their choice clear, electing first-time candidate Olivia Calderon to the Mayoral seat, beating incumbent Mayor Daniel Borreli.
Calderon is the daughter of late Mayor Olivia Trujillo, who died of cancer during her last year of service.
Calderon is continuing the family's legacy in office.
"She said to me, 'Mija, I'm not afraid. I know exactly where I'm going. I just wish I had a little more time. There was so much more work I wanted to do,'" said Olivia Calderon. "And she asked me to consider it, I'm going to tell you."
This is the second woman to be elected as mayor of Arvin, and the first time a mother and daughter duo have been elected back-to-back to the seat.
A historic moment for the City, but it didn't come without tension.

At times council members described meetings as a "circus" and condemned Calderon, saying she came to council meetings only to campaign.
Calderon says she found motivation through the hard times.
"I come from a very, long line of strong women, faithful women who are grounded in faith," said Calderon. "We believe in God, and when things get tough, we get on our knees and we pray."
Her supporters have a clear idea of their expectations.
"She did say she really wants Arvin to light up, so I'm expecting to see a whole bunch of lights all around Arvin," said Jose Luis Garcia Jr. "She was going to make it easier for businesses to come into Arvin, so that way our tax revenue, our economic life here in Arvin, flourishes and grows."
Calderon says she will work to fill the vacant seat in City Council.
"My call would be for a special election to allow for the community to choose for there to be an election, and the residents of Arvin are not disenfranchised and they get to decide who represents them on the council," said Olivia Calderon.
Calderon says her term is both a continuation of her mother's work plus her new vision for the city.
"I want to make sure that we are going after every public dollar that's available for us to be able to repair our streets, our parks and bring in programming, services for our community," said Calderon. "So, it's a legacy of service but yes we have a new vision for Arvin."
