Homeowners and renters in the Chicago area who were left with disaster-related damages in July have two weeks left to apply for assistance.Those whose homes were damaged by the storms, tornadoes or flooding between July 13-15 could qualify for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration.The deadline for all applications is Nov. 19, FEMA announced Wednesday. Residents in Cook, Fulton, Henry, St. Clair, Washington, Will and Winnebago counties qualify for FEMA assistance.More than $50.6 million in FEMA assistance has been issued to residents affected by the storms.More than $24 million of the total is housing grants for home repair, replacement and temporary housing assistance; the other $26.5 million has been directed toward personal property replacement, moving and storage fees, transportation, child care, and medical and dental expenses.More than $1.6 million in long-term, low-interest disaster loans has also been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration for homeowners and renters.Applications for FEMA assistance can be submitted online to DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.After applying for FEMA assistance, people can also apply for a long-term, low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.People are not required to apply for an SBA loan to be considered for FEMA grants but could miss out on SBA’s help with disaster-related expenses that FEMA assistance doesn’t cover, officials said.
