Massive snow totals in the mountains this week portend a great weekend of skiing, including five ski areas poised to open for the season. Copper Mountain, which has received 28 inches since the series of storms began on Sunday, Winter Park (16) and Breckenridge (14) will open Friday. Eldora, which also picked up 14 inches, opens Thursday. Loveland will open on Saturday. Sixteen ski areas have received a foot or more over the past five days including Wolf Creek with 21 inches and Echo Mountain with 17, according to the OpenSnow forecasting and reporting service. This week’s openings will bring the number of ski areas in operation to eight. Wolf Creek opened Oct. 22. Keystone and Arapahoe Basin opened Saturday. It will open with the Alpenglow chair in operation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. Three trails with a 1,000-foot vertical drop will be open. No beginner terrain will be available. A small terrain park will be open as well. Winter Park will open with the Gemini Express lift in operation, serving Village Way and Lower Parkway. Loveland will be operating with the Chet’s Dream chair running, serving Cat Walk, Mambo and Home Run. Breckenridge will be opening with the BreckConnect Gondola, Colorado SuperChair and Five SuperChair serving primarily intermediate terrain on the 4 O’Clock and Springmeier trails. A small terrain park will open Saturday on Springmeier More snow is in store rest of the week. Wolf Creek is expected to receive 15 more inches over the next five days, according to OpenSnow. Seven other areas are predicted to receive six inches or more, including Monarch (12), Echo Mountain (11) and Eldora (10).
