(KRON) -- Initial election results in the campaign to recall Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao point toward the mayor being removed from office. Thao was elected with a 50.3% vote through rank-choice voting in 2022. The mayor believes her policies have led to Oakland’s most recent drop in crime. She also credits herself for creating a home for the city’s newest baseball team, the Oakland Ballers.  Pamela Price recall effort ahead in initial returns Critics say Thao contributed to the public safety crisis in Oakland, partly through budget mismanagement, and the departure of the city’s Major League Baseball team, the Oakland Athletics. The campaign to recall Thao received enough signatures to make the ballot back in May -- before the FBI raided the mayor’s home in June.  In an election night interview with KRON4, Thao said she had no regrets as mayor, despite a likely recall looming. Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas issued a statement Wednesday saying that "while thousands of ballots remain to be counted," "it appears the voters have spoken." Fortunato Bas said she would work closely with the Oakland city attorney to plan a smooth transition should the recall go through. Thao is not the only East Bay elected official facing a likely recall. Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price is also the target of a recall effort with initial returns also pointing to her being recalled.
