Savannah voters react to presidential election results

SAVANNAH (WSAV) - Vice President Kamala Harris dominated Chatham County in the 2024 presidential election, but it wasn't enough to push her to the finish line in the swing state of Georgia.
Both candidates came to Chatham County to rally voters, and while Harris did win over the county, Donald Trump carried the state and the nation.
Democrats and Republicans who spoke with WSAV have one thing in common - they shared their hope for the future.
Local lawmakers react to Trump’s win
"I think it's bringing back what's possible in America and also teaching people to love our country," Brittany Brown, chair of the Chatham County Republican Party, said. "I think we all want the same things, and that's to be able to afford to raise our families and for us to be prosperous, to have the American dream."
Brown said she is ready to see Trump's administration tackle the border, improve the economy and encourage people to love this country again.
On the other hand, a group of students who attend the Savannah College of Art and Design said they were counting on Harris to fight for issues important to them, like abortion, LGBTQ+ protection and gun violence.
"I was a bit disappointed because it just shows how much our country would rather vote for a convicted felon rather than a woman in office who has political experience," Amelia Tankerson said.
Questions raised about Chatham County Board’s compliance with Georgia state elections law
Tankerson and her friends, all of them first-time voters, said they don't want to lose hope, and for now, they are just leaning on one another.
"I think just being there for each other in this difficult time and just really trying to look at the positive side of it all and how we can move past this," Matthew Golonaka said.
Brown also shared a message of unity.
"I really hope that people can, whatever differences they have, I'm hoping that they can give this administration a chance," she said.
