EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) — The mother of an Emporia man is pleading for answers nine months after her son was killed in a hit-and-run. 8News spoke with mother, Arnetta Williams. She said her worst nightmare came true on Feb. 26, 2024 when her son, Tymere Newman was hit and killed. Williams said the last time she spoke with her son was Feb. 24 when he told her he loved her. Two days later, Williams said she received a message from his girlfriend at the time saying he went missing. Within hours, Williams said she received a call from her brother explaining the worst. “He was like, hey, I don't know what's going on. He said, but, you know, one of our relatives reached out to him to say that he's received a phone call saying that someone got hit on Highway 58 or there's a dead body on Highway 58 and they believe that it is Tymere," Williams said. According to Virginia State Police, Newman was hit on route 58 the morning of Feb. 26. The driver who hit Newman drove away. "I refuse to be one of those mothers that just sit back and do absolutely nothing when their child is laid on the side of the highway," Williams said. "The fight will continue until until until I take my last breath." Police told 8News that no witnesses have come forward and no arrest has been made. While Williams and her family wait for answers, she said she took her fight for answers to the streets of Emporia hoping to spread awareness. “My son was loved by everyone that has encountered him. And to have to bury him so soon, you know, unfortunately is definitely something that we are struggling with. And all we can do right now is basically try to continue to fight for justice," Williams said.
