PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) -- Many of the faces will be different come January, but there won't be any change in which political party runs the South Dakota Legislature. Republicans will continue to dominate. That's based on the final unofficial results as reported to the South Dakota Secretary of State office on Wednesday afternoon. Minnehaha County had a series of issues, including getting a judge on Wednesday morning to order that a ballot box be unsealed, followed by slow data uploads. The last four precincts to be reported were in districts 10 and 15, which in previous elections had been Democratic strongholds but had unusually tight races this year, and in 14, where Republican Sen. Larry Zikmund of Sioux Falls was turning back a challenge from Democrat Sandra Henry of Sioux Falls. The secretary of state website showed at exactly 5 p.m. CT that all 691 precincts had fully reported. One recount is possible. That's in House District 15, where Democrat Eric Muckey of Sioux Falls edged past Republican Joni Tschetter by nine votes for the second seat 4,364 to 4,355. Unofficially, Republicans will hold 32 seats in the Senate. That's a gain of one. Republican Tamara Grove of Lower Brule upset Democratic Sen. Shawn Bordeaux of Mission in District 26 on Tuesday, while Democratic and independent newcomers failed to defeat Republican incumbents Arch Beal of Sioux Falls, Helene Duhamel of Rapid City, and Zikmund. Will Trump’s victory lead to a Rhoden governorship? Democrats had three Senate winners on Tuesday: incumbent Liz Larson of Sioux Falls in District 10; former House member Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls in District 15; and incumbent Red Dawn Foster of Pine Ridge in District 27. In the House, Republicans will hold 64 seats, a net gain of one that came because of two victories. Republican Bobbi Andera of Sioux Falls placed second in District 10, ahead of Democratic incumbent Kameron Nelson of Sioux Falls. And Republican Jana Hunt of Dupree beat Democrat Carl Petersen of Parade for the District 26A seat currently held by House Democratic leader Oren Lesmeister, who's term-limited and therefore couldn't run for a fifth consecutive term in the House. The Democrats won six House seats: incumbent Erin Healy of Sioux Falls in District 10; incumbent Kadyn Wittman of Sioux Falls and Muckey in District 15; incumbent Eric Emery of Rosebud in District 26B; incumbent Peri Pourier of Rapid City in District 27; and Nicole Uhre-Balk of Rapid City in District 32, where she placed first in a three-way race against two Republicans.
