COROLLA, N.C. (WAVY) -- A Corolla mule was recently euthanized on Oct. 30 after a small scrotal hernia that occluded the affected loops of his small intestine, according to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. This is the third wild animal the Corolla Wild Horse Fund has euthanized in a month. The mule lived in the wild like the other Corolla horses. He also traveled with mares and raised foals that weren't his — since mules are sterile. In 2017, the horse fund sedated him to trim his feet, which helped temporarily. After they grew back a year later, Raymond was taken to the farm for additional care. "He settled right in and figured out how to wrap us around his hooves, and for the next five years our lives would revolve around him," the fund said. "We were able to correct many of the issues with his hooves and keep him sound and comfortable, he was put on a diet more appropriate for a mule his age, and he even agreed to being halter trained." The Corolla horse fund tried to keep Raymond comfortable the remainder of his days, but due to his age, temperament and underlying health conditions, they eventually euthanized him.
