NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Members of the New Orleans City Council have announced a motion has been filed to designate the site of the Woolworth sit-in and the Hard Rock Hotel Collapse as a historic landmark. According to councilmembers Freddie King and Helena Moreno, the motion to start the landmarking process for the site at 1031 Canal St. came after discussions with family members impacted by the 2019 collapse and staff. The designation will recognize the 1960 sit-in at Woolworth's on Canal Street, where seven New Orleans students protested the business' refusal to serve Black customers. According to the council, the motion will be heard at Thursday's meeting and, if approved, will move forward to be reviewed by the CBDHDLC to make a recommendation to the council.
